What is Primary Immunodeficiency?

Primary immunodeficiency (PI) is a group of rare, chronic disorders in which part of the body’s immune system is missing or doesn’t work correctly. These conditions are usually inherited and are present from birth, although they may not be diagnosed until later in life. People with PI are more prone to frequent infections—such as sinus infections, pneumonia, or skin infections—that are harder to treat or come back often. Some types also cause immune system overreactions or autoimmune problems.

How is Primary Immunodeficiency Managed Through Infusion Therapy?

Infusion therapy plays a key role in treating many types of primary immunodeficiency by replacing missing or malfunctioning antibodies. This treatment, called immunoglobulin (Ig) replacement therapy, delivers antibodies (IgG) directly into the bloodstream through an IV to help the body fight off infections more effectively. These infusions are typically given every 3 to 4 weeks at an infusion center, helping to maintain steady antibody levels and reduce the frequency and severity of infections. For some patients, this treatment is life-changing—leading to fewer illnesses, fewer hospital visits, and better overall quality of life.

What to Expect at my Primary Immunodeficiency Infusion

Primary Immunodeficiency infusions at Advanced Wellness use a very thin catheter to connect an IV line to one of the patient's veins to infuse the medication. All of our locations have a Nurse Practitioner on site and the patient is monitored continuously throughout treatment for any adverse reactions. Patients can expect the infusion to last anywhere from an hour to two hours. After the IV treatment is complete, the patient is disconnected from the IV by a nurse. During initial treatments, the patient is asked to stay on site for a short time post-treatment for observation.

In each infusion suite, Advanced Wellness provides snacks and beverages as well as streaming devices for comfort throughout the infusion appointment.

Preparing for Your Infusion

Please ask your physician if any temporary medical conditions, such as a cold or the flu, should prevent you from receiving your infusion

Drink plenty of water. Being well hydrated will make it easier to start your IV

Avoid excessive amounts of coffee, as it can be dehydrating

Bring a list of current medications you are taking

Wear comfortable clothes

Because some visits may be longer, you may bring books or one visitor. We have light snacks and beverages, blankets and tvs available in our suites

Due to the nature of the drugs administered, small children are not permitted

If you have any additional questions about your upcoming visit, please contact your local Advanced Wellness Infusion Center
